Unlike the Krugerrand which is only 91-7% pure, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is one of the purest gold coins currently in production. When minted by the Royal Canadian Mint, this coin is 99.99% pure or as it is listed by those who sell these coins .9999 fine in content. This means that to all intents and purposes there are no alloys or contaminants in the gold when it is melted and formed into the blanks that will be used to stamp out the coins.

Not only this but, the Maple Leaf is made from 24 karat gold that is mined only from Canadian mines, there is absolutely no gold content in any of these coins that come from any other country. You will find that these coins are available in 5 different sizes. These are as follows in ounces, 1/20, 1/10, 1/4, 1/2 and 1 ounce. All coins are guaranteed to measure the exact amount and even though they are made from pure gold are still considered legal currency and have a face value.

These values are $1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 and are subject to the Canadian Currency Act along with the Royal Canadian Mint Act. These two acts both endorse the coins as legal tender (Currency Act) and denote them as non-circulating bullion coins (Mint Act). All 5 coins are identical in design on both faces with the exception of the face value and the actual weight of the coin. These are considered by many to be the only Maple Leaf coins issued however in 1994 the Royal Canadian Mint issued a 1/15 ounce coin in both gold and platinum that had a face value of $2. These coins were not very popular and no longer being struck.

Although the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf was first struck in answer to the Krugerrand when it was the only other bullion coin on the market, there are now several other countries including the US who issue their own gold bullion coins.

They have all become very popular methods for gold investment by thousands of investors around the world. In May of 2007, the Mint unveiled the largest Gold Maple Leaf coin to ever be made, weighing in at 100kg of 99.999% pure gold and measuring 50cm in diameter, the face value of this coin is $1 million. At the time it was made the gold used to create it was valued at $2 million and it was supposed to be a one of a kind creation as part of a promotion for the new 99.999 % pure Maple Leaf coins, but several investors asked to purchase one and the Mint agreed to fill orders as they came in. For investors, these are rated among the best gold bullion coins to purchase due to their purity.
