The beloved S-Mint Silver American Eagle is back for 2019! Following the precedent set last year, the 2019 S Mint release will again be available for purchase as a stand-alone item while also being struck without mintage, product or household order limits.

United States Gold Bureau clients will have the opportunity to add one of these beloved pieces – graded at the proof-perfect PF70 level – to their investment portfolios starting today, August 28th.

Silver American Eagle History

Initially authorized by Congress in 1985 and released for the first time in 1986, the Silver American Eagle has grown into one of the nation’s most renowned coins. The instant reverence and esteemed reputation enjoyed by the Silver American Eagle have solidified the coin as a proven value-add to precious metals portfolios of all shapes and sizes.

Today, the Silver American Eagle is struck almost exclusively at the West Point Mint, although, its origins are rooted on the West Coast. A truly bi-coastal coin, the Silver Eagle was struck for the first six years of its tenure in San Francisco before being transitioned to the East Coast – first, to Philadelphia then to West Point – where the bulk of its production is carried out today.

While the majority of annual issues now come from the state of New York, the affinity for and allure of the nostalgic "S Mint" Silver Eagles have never dissipated. Demand for coins bearing the iconic “S” mintmark - which is indicative of the Eagle's original home at the San Francisco Mint - has, on the contrary, remained so high that the U.S. Mint decided in 2012 to reintroduce the Silver S Mint Eagle in a limited-run reboot. This 2012 issue was offered exclusively as part of a commemorative coin set that befittingly celebrated the 75th anniversary of the San Francisco Mint being housed in its current location.

In 2017, the U.S. Mint released two more limited-run series  – the first as part of its annual "Congratulations Set" and the second as part of its 2017 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set.

Last year, the Mint wholly embraced the newly reinstated S-Mint Eagle by re-releasing the coin as a stand-alone item, versus selling it exclusively as part of a broader set. This was the first time the coin was available for purchase on its own since 1992. 2019 S Mint Silver Eagles are also issued as individual investment pieces rather than one coin of a multi-piece arrangement.

Do 2019 S Mints look or feel different than previous releases?

While 2019 S Mint coins mirror previously released Silver Eagles in look and feel, the beloved "S" mintmark continues to set these West Coast beauties apart from their regular-issue counterparts.

On the face of the coin, investors and coin enthusiasts alike will be pleased to see Adolph A. Weinman’s familiar yet always iconic “Walking Liberty” imagery. Originally designed for and struck on the Walking Liberty Half Dollars in 1916, the image depicts a dynamic Lady Liberty in full stride walking toward a rising sun. Liberty’s right arm is outstretched – perhaps welcoming the dawn of a new day – while she cradles a bushel of oak and laurel branches in her left arm. A billowing American flag beautifully wraps around her shoulders, adding to the striking elegance and emotional appeal of the coin’s artistry. The word "L I B E R T Y" lines the top rim of the coin while "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the coin's mintage year adorn its right and bottom edges respectively.

The 2019 S Mint Silver Eagle’s reverse also bears the same image as in years past. A heraldic eagle sits in the center of the coin's reverse bearing a shield upon its chest while its wings spread brilliantly to either side of its body. The bird is shown gripping a bundle of arrows its left talon and a single olive branch in its right, mimicking the Great Seal of the United States. The stately eagle clasps in its beak a flowing ribbon that bears the country's official motto: "E PLURIBUS UNUM." Thirteen stars are arranged above the eagle’s head in an inverse triangle, representing the 13 original American colonies. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” lines the top rim of the reverse and the coin’s weight in troy ounces of fine silver plus its legal tender face value appear along the bottom edge.

The iconic “S” mintmark that has made the coin so notable is also struck alongside the stately eagle image.

The 2019 S Mint Silver Eagle is, as are all Silver American Eagles, composed of one troy ounce of .999 pure fine silver. It measures 1.6 inches in diameter – about the same as a golf ball – and boasts a legal tender face value of $1.
