Description:

History of the Coin:

The Silver American Eagle was introduced by the U.S. Mint a year after the coin was authorized by the Liberty Coin Act of 1985. Since 1986 the coin has been minted in three different locations, the Philadelphia Mint, San Francisco Mint, and the West Point Mint. The U.S. Mint produces both a proof version and  bullion version of the Silver American Eagle.

The design of the Silver American Eagle is very different from that of the Gold American Eagle. The obverse of the coin features the "Walking Liberty" design by Adolph A. Weinman. The same design that was used from 1916 to 1947 for the Walking Liberty Half Dollar.  This design has been a long time favorite in the history of United States coinage so its inclusion in the Silver American Eagle was a logical decision.

John Mercanti's portrait of a majestic bald eagle with a shield covering the breast of the bird is featured on the reverse of the coin. The face value, weight, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and 13 stars are also included in the reverse of the coin.

Proof version of the Silver America Eagle differ from the bullion version of the coin in that the proof version includes a mint mark whereas the bullion versions do not. From 1986 to 1992 the proof Silver American Eagles were minted exclusively in San Francisco. Then from 1993 to 2000 proof coins were minted in Philadelphia and from 2001 to 2008 the Silver American Eagles were minted in West Point.

There weren't any proof version of the coin minted in 2009. When production of proof Silver American Eagles began again in 2010 they were minted in West Point. All three mints produced Silver American Eagle proof coins in 2016 and 2017 with the majority coming from West Point and a smaller number from San Francisco and Philadelphia.
