The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is minted by the Royal Canadian Mint and has become one of the most popular ways to invest in gold coins. It was introduced in 1979 as an alternative to the South African Krugerrand, which was the only gold bullion coin made at the time.
The obverse, or front of the coin, features Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, while Canada’s signature maple leaf is depicted on the back of the coin, or reverse. Each Maple Leaf is legal Canadian tender guaranteed by the Government of Canada for its weight and purity.
In 2013 and 2015 new security features were introduced to ensure the authenticity. In 2013 a micro-engraved textured maple leaf done with laser technology was added to a small area of the reverse side of the coin.
