The obverse of the coin is Lady Liberty, assertively walking with an olive branch in her left as the symbol of peace and a torch in her right lighting the way to freedom. The reverse of the coin also includes an olive branch. A male eagle holds the olive branch in his talons as he returns to a nest with a female eagle and an eaglet.
The $50 Gold American contains 1.091 troy oz of 22-karat gold (1 oz of pure gold). These coins can be purchased individually or within a proof 70 set by year.
The coin will arrive in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Production of Gold American Eagle coins are based on economic factors so production levels vary from year to year. Actual year will based on availability at time of fulfillment.
The Gold American Eagle is the only official 22 karat gold coin produced the U.S. Mint and is one of only two official gold coins of the U.S. Mint with the Gold American Buffalo being the official 24 karat gold coin. Gold American Eagles is legal tender of the United States and comes in four different sizes including the 1 Troy oz coin. The 22 karat coin is not as soft as the Gold American Buffalo and is more resitant to wear than the 24 karat coin. The weight and purity of each Gold American Eagle coin is guaranteed by the United States goverment.
The Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 permitted the U.S. Mint to produce a series of gold coins. The Gold American Eagle began production the following year and since that time the Gold American Eagle has been amongst the most popular gold coins in the world.
Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) coins have never been used in circulation or handled heavily so it retains its original mint luster. Investors should expect a very high quality example of a coin that is in BU condition. Brilliant Uncirculated and Mint State are used interchangably for coins.
Eagle is the official designation made by the United States for pre-1933 ten dollar gold coins so the weight is usually included when talking about the Gold American Eagle coin, "1 ounce Gold American Eagle."
