Description:

Snap up a classic American gold coin, $2.50 Liberty Gold Quarter Eagle, in brilliant uncirculated condition. This coin represents a denomination that dates back to the Coinage Act of 1792, where it took its name from the weightier $10 eagle coin. This particular version of the coin, the Liberty Head or Coronet Head Quarter Eagle, was produced between 1840 and 1907. Your piece will be a common and random year of issue somewhere in that date range. Also, you can be assured your piece will be in BU or Brilliant Uncirculated condition, so you'll know it's never been circulated and contains its original mint luster. Liberty Gold Quarter Eagles were struck at the Philadelphia, New Orleans, Charlotte, Dahlonega and San Francisco mints. Given its 67 year history and the different mints producing the coin, there are over 150 different issues of the Liberty Gold Quarter Eagle to collect, so buy this piece today to augment your collection.

Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse of this coin shows a left-facing profile portrait of Liberty, wearing a coronet emblazoned with the word "LIBERTY." Liberty's hair is held up at the back and decorated with a string of beads, though some tendrils have escaped, tumbling down her neck. Liberty's portrait is surrounded by 13 stars denoting the original colonies of the United States and the year of issue is placed below the portrait. The reverse design features an eagle, holding an olive branch and arrows, denoting that the U.S. is a peace loving country but one prepared and able to defend itself should the need arise. A union shield, with the requisite vertical and horizontal striped, is shown along with the eagle. Forming a circle around the design is lettering showing the country of origin "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA." Where mint marks exist, they are shown below the eagle on the reverse side, but coins from Philadelphia did not carry such a mark.

This classic pre-1933 gold coin bears a design which has the longest uninterrupted use of any coin in U.S. history; a tribute to its designer if ever there was one. Christian worked his way up from an apprenticeship to the very top of his profession as the Third Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint. He first developed his engraving skills on ornamental clocks and then bank notes, during which time he also provided engraving services to the U.S. Mint. Christian initially refused the position of Assistant Director at the U.S. Mint, before accepting the position of Second Engraver in 1835, before becoming the Chief Engraver in 1840.

The $2.50 Liberty Gold Quarter Eagle is a coin which during its circulation must have seen more change and tumult than any coin before or since, from America's Civil War to the country's westward expansion and development. Cradle a piece of history in your hand when you purchase a $2.50 Liberty Gold Quarter Eagle BU; there's no other coin quite like it.
