First offered to collectors in October 1989, the Gold Philharmonic is made from .9999 fine Gold sits alongside the Silver and Platinum editions of the coin, which are also available for purchase.

Since its launch in 1989, the Gold Philharmonic coin has retained its stunning design, which is based on the Vienna Musikverein's Golden Hall. On the obverse of the coin is the Golden Hall itself, alongside the words 'REPUBLIK OSTERREICH,' the coin's gold purity, the year of issue and the denomination of the coin, which will be either 100 euros or 2000 schilling. The reverse of the coin features instruments such as the cello, harp, Vienna horn, bassoon, and violin, which all make up the Philharmonic Orchestra upon which this coin is based.

In February 2008, the Gold Philharmonic coin was joined by a Silver version of the same purity and denomination. Featuring the same designs that make up the Gold edition of the coin, the silver coin is made from .999 fine Silver. A .9995 fine Platinum edition joined the lineup in 2016.

When the fifteenth anniversary of the Vienna Philharmonic Gold bullion coin was celebrated in 2004, the Austrian Mint unveiled a 1,000-ounce version of the coin, which had a face value of €100,000. Known as the "Big Phil," this coin contains an impressive 31.103 kg of .9999 fine Gold.

For the 20th anniversary of the coin, a 20-ounce 9999 fine Gold Philharmonic coin was unveiled, while the twenty-fifth anniversary was celebrated.
