The Official Mammal of the United States, the American Buffalo and the classic, stoic image of a Native American with feathers flowing from his hair are featured on James Earle Fraser’s iconic design for the Silver American Buffalo. The ½ oz coin beautifully celebrates the heritage of the United States in ½ Troy oz of .999 pure silver. Privately minted in the United States, the Silver American Buffalo mimics the design first used on the Buffalo Nickel in 1913.

  • Contains ½ oz of .999 pure silver
  • Historical design of Native American and the American Buffalo
  • Minted in the United States

”Silver rounds” is the common term used for privately minted silver coins. The term “coins” is not replaced with “rounds” because the United States Mint reserves the term “coin” for government issued currency produced for circulation. The privately produced rounds have a set weight of ½ Troy ounce of .999 fine silver.

The design of the ½ oz Silver Buffalo Round is a tribute to the iconic design of the Indian Head nickel (Type 1) of James Earle Fraser. Fraser’s design was released in early 1913. His upbringing in Winona, Minnesota and its frontier influence is obvious in his artistic designs and sculptures including that of the Indian Head nickel. The original design had a more significant mound of dirt on the reverse. It was later reduced and became known as the Type 2 variation. It continued to be minted for the remainder of 1913 until 1938. There were a few exceptions. In 1922, 1932, and 1933 no nickels were struck.

The obverse or front of the coin is the portrait of a Native American. Fraser created the design from a mixture of the features of three chiefs from different American Indian tribes, Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons. The obverse also shows the motto "LIBERTY" on the top right. The reverse or back of the round stands an American Bison, or what is commonly referred to as a buffalo. Black Diamond, who lived in the New York City Central Park Zoo during the 1910s is believed to be the inspiration behind the design of the reverse of the round. Included on the reverse of the round is the weight and purity of the round.

Silver is a practical investment because of its many uses within industry. Technology plays a significant role in our daily lives and silver is a key component of many of these electronics. If you use a computer or cell phone then you are most likely using silver. If you looked in the mirror this morning then you used something that most likely used silver in the manufacturing process. Solar power, once very expensive, is a renewable energy that many believe will be our future. The photovoltaic cells used in solar panels is produced with silver. As demand for solar power continues to increase around the world, the demand for silver should increase as well.

The U.S. Gold Bureau also offers other ways to invest in silver. The Silver American Eagle, Silver Canadian Maple Leaf, and the 5oz America the Beautiful Coin along with many other gold and silver coins help investors and collectors diversify their portfolios.
